CSV to Excel Without Losing Leading Zeros

Turn an original CSV or TSV into an Excel workbook that keeps codes, long IDs and formula-looking strings as text. Review the format and column choices before downloading.

Keep the references in your original export

Opening a CSV directly in a spreadsheet can change codes and long identifiers. This tool starts with Text for every column. The saved Data worksheet preserves your original headers, records and literal values; Summary records the format, counts and selected types.

A worked example

These original values stay actual Excel Text cells: 00123, 12345678901234567890, 03-04 and =1+1. The last example stays literal text.

How to convert

  1. Upload the original CSV or TSV export.
  2. Confirm UTF-8 or Windows-1252 and its comma, tab, semicolon or pipe delimiter.
  3. Keep identifiers as Text. Select Numeric only for ordinary decimal columns whose formatting you want interpreted.
  4. Review the before/after values and cell types, then download the XLSX.

What to know

Numeric interpretation can remove leading zeros, plus signs or trailing decimal zeros. Unsafe conversions are rejected. Dates and formulas are never inferred or executed. Digits already missing from a damaged source cannot be recovered.

Limits: one 50 MiB file, up to 50,000 data rows, 200 columns and 500,000 total workbook cells including headers and Summary. Very long text cells may need shortening to fit Excel. Processing is bounded at 60 seconds; the saved workbook must fit 100 MiB.
