TL;DR try the newly improved PDF to Color Online tool right now.

Here’s a quick review of some of the recent improvements to the PDF to Color Tool, which allows you to print without black ink by changing the colors of all the elements in your PDF to something of your choice.

The download limit has been increased from 300 to 1,000 pages. That’s a lot more! If you have a longer PDF just adjust the pages to download in the browser and do the processing in chunks — not ideal, but then it is quite rare to have a PDF with greater than 1,000 pages. Also, the file size the of the download can now be significantly larger, sometimes upwards of 500 mb! If you are on a slow internet connection that times out, try processing in smaller chunks. You can use the PDF merge tool to combine those chunks later, although the file size will still be large.

The processing time for downloading has been decreased by approx. 35%. Before, a 300 page PDF may have taken 5 minutes, but now it is close to 2:30 (although higher times for PDFs with larger pages). Indeed, it was this decrease in processing time that has lead to the ability to increase the download limit.

More CPU’s are now available to process large multi-page PDFs faster. This is a behind-the-scenes-improvement that should speed things up and prevent errors on large PDFs.

The preview or modified image in the browser is now in higher resolution. It is still somewhat lower than you get in the high-quality download, but now you can preview the results with more clarity.

File upload size has been increased from 40 mb to 500mb. More than 10 times as much!

Please let us know if you have ideas for additional improvements!

Here’s a guest post to show a different side of the Make PDFs Look Scanned tool.

Gone are the days when you have to scan a document and share. The digital world has revolutionized in a blink of an eye. But SuperTool did not stop there it seems. It has gone above and beyond converting a doc to PDF and opened the genie from the box. Here comes the Make PDFs Look Scanned tool.

Yes, while you already have the document in its original PDF format, you can now make it look as if it was scanned. You can add some wrinkles to make it look like slightly crumpled paper, or draw and put some icons/shapes and much more!!!

Time For Some Noise!

Thinking if it can add a digital signature? Of course, it can. This unique tool is so stupefying that you do not have to worry when one says to print the PDF document, sign it, and upload it. You can simply add your signature or text (whatever you want) without making it look digital. The ink seems wet (sort of), giving the text an embedded/textured feeling. Isn’t that astounding?! Obviously yes!

More so, the signature or the initials look so real that you would be unable to distinguish between an actual paper scanned or a scanned PDF made to look real.

The destructive filters and the decayed images all look natural, making the PDF (oops, the paper document) come alive.

It Surprises With Every Click!

It’s entertaining as well as helpful for usability to add realism! The tool beautifully adjusts lighting, contrast, and other visual components automatically. Some tools have these functionalities, but their flaws appear manufactured rather than genuine. However, this SuperTool creates unique pieces of art! It gives PDFs an old-fashioned feel, a rich feel. I would say – the dirt, fine lines, and creases are the three types of cool icing on the cake.

It’s Authentic!

The best part I liked the most is that it also adds a sense of authenticity as if the document was originally scanned on a physical scanner. Also, it can protect sensitive information by making it harder to copy or edit the document (but try the Flatten PDF tool if that is your only goal). And it can add a unique look to a presentation or report.

It is among the most secure and reliable web tools I have ever used. You wouldn’t be troubled by malicious links or annoying advertisements. It is entirely trouble-free and performs its function flawlessly. Also, do not worry if you think it will keep your information and spamming you. This tool is the safest to use in this line. I recommend using it at least once and getting the genie out of the bottle.

Conclusion

When I looked at it for the first time, I genuinely could not identify the difference between which is a real paper and which has been made to look scanned! The crumbles, the signature with the ink, the handwritten notes, you are bound to miss this as a PDF-look-scanned but accept it as a real scanned paper.

Indeed, you can surely make your PDF look scanned; converting any PDF scanned document is a breeze. No delays while converting your file. Just upload your PDF File and the process completes automatically. To download the file, all you have to do is simply complete the quick registration process. So, get started today and don’t give any second thoughts. Save paper and go digital!

Adding new tools is fun. They each have a unique set of coding challenges and a unique set of uses. The online PDF merging tool offers a couple of new features. First, obviously, it merges PDF documents. Second, you can now merge a combination of photos/images/PNGs/JPEGs and PDFs. One image per page if you upload a GIF. [New in 2025: SuperTool now offers the ability to merge Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and many other kinds of docs via the Merge Multiple Word Documents into PDF tool.]

One new feature is an “upload” box where you can drag and drop files (you can do that on the other tools by dragging onto the file upload dialog, but it isn’t obvious or pretty). Other features include re-ordering, duplicating, and deleting uploaded files. Each uploaded file turns into a thumbnail with the image of the first page and the name of the document. Each has a delete and clone button on top of it when you hover your mouse (or click on mobile).

There are other tools that merge PDFs. Adding this to the SuperTool suite of PDF image editing makes Supertool.com more of a comprehensive site. Also, it is pretty quick and fully featured so it has some benefits over other tools. Finally, SuperTools subscriptions are still some of the lowest priced and high value PDF editing suites available. Combined with the free programs you may have on you computer, SuperTool makes your PDF editing dreams come true! (Does anyone have PDF editing dreams?!!)

The purposes of combining PDFs include:

expanding a report with new material

combining two or more files to make something new

duplicating the length of some files (often in new places to add consistency and spice)

store multiple files together (often grouped by subject matter), which makes subsequent retrieval and review easier.

sharing a bunch of documents you created in one file

The PDF color conversions at SuperTool change the color of PDFs, and ideally not anything else. Development and testing was done at SuperTool to ensure that the “printed” size of converted documents remains the same after conversion. That is, if you have an object in a PDF that is 1 inch wide before conversion, it should be that size after conversion. For example, if you are printing a document for cross-stitch, the printed size really matters. Otherwise your fine handiwork will end up unintentionally larger or smaller than the pattern. Luckily, the SuperTool works — it does not change the size of PDF documents!

What is “Printed Size”?

A PDF is just a digital document. A document printed on a sheet of paper is the product of converting digital instructions to “real life” or the analog world. The “printed size” is usually just a straight replica of what was intended by the digital instructions in the PDF. In almost all cases, there is not size change. However, the printer driver on your computer and the printer itself may alter the digital instructions. If your document prints out too big or too small, verify that the following are unchecked:

“Shrink to Fit” (or “Shrink oversized pages”

Fit

Custom Size

Scale (or Custom Scale)

To ensure that the printed document uses the instructions inside the PDF, verify that the following setting is selected:

Actual Size (or Scale = 100%)

PDF Document Printing Too Small or Too Large

Some PDFs include instructions to print objects, but do not specify an intended printed size. For example, some PDFs include letters or symbols as part of a font (e.g., Helvetica) and the instructions are to render it at a certain font size. Font size doesn’t translate to real-world size in all cases. Moreover, some PDFs include fonts with instructions about how to size the real-world printing of them, however, if the font isn’t available on a user’s local system, then other fonts are substituted, which could change the size.

The solution is to make sure that fonts are embedded in the PDF files. However, that is not often under the control of the person who is trying to print! In this case, you may try the instructions here, which suggest un-checking the following setting: “Rely on system fonts only, do not use document fonts.”

Larger PDF File Sizes?

The PDF color conversion often makes the file size larger. For example, a file that is 1 MB may become 2 MB. This is because of a conversion of “vector” instructions to bitmap instructions. A line may have been coded as a black line .1 inch wide by 2 inches long — that’s vector-like instruction. The color conversion turns that into, “put a black dot here, then another black dot next to it, and so on.” The latter format, which looks the same on the screen display and when printed (as long as you don’t zoom in much), takes up more file space, hence the larger size. The same process occurs when you use the PDF Flattener online tool, which also changes the kinds of instructions in a PDF.

If you have a document with a black background and white text, then reverse the colors using the PDF Color Reverse Tool.

If you have a very dark document, increase the brightness using the PDF Brightness adjustment on the PDF to Greyscale Tool. This will convert all of the color and remove some of the black and thus save black ink.

If you have a PDF with an unnecessary amount of color — like in photos — convert that PDF to black and white to save color ink costs.

If you have a black and white document, but want to save black ink (or maybe you’ve run out), then change the PDF to a new color using the PDF Color Changer Tool.

If you are thinking about printing, signing, scanning and then emailing a PDF, mimic that process via the PDF to Scan Look Tool.

Strategies to Print Without Ink

Here’s the punchline: change the colors of your document using this online tool which enables you to use the color ink cartridges. This post provides an example of this working, along with an explanation of why it works.

Successfully Printing without Black Ink: From Black to Blue

When you run out of black in and try to print a document it can look nearly blank, like this:

Doesn’t work! This HP printer is similar to other “thermal inkjet” printers such as those made by Epson, Sharp, IBM, Brother, Dell, and Kodak.

Switching all the colors of the document to blue can make it print legibly, like this:

Success! Print of a PDF converted to blue.

So much successful printing after converting PDF colors!

Top 5 Tips to Print without Black Ink

It is possible to print without black ink, see below! Note that all of the tips might work on some printer but not others… there is a large variation in printer technology, models, and conditions.

Tip #1: Switch your Document Colors

Switching the colors of the text and images can make printing successfully. In a Word Doc, you may be able to select all and then change the color of fonts. If your word doc contains images or if you have a PDF, then the process can be achieved with this SuperTool: an online tool that converts all the colors in a document.

Switching document colors can produce a successful print

Inkjet printers spray small droplets of ink onto paper. Colors are combined on the paper to where various colors appear as form images and text.

The green line represents voltage over time. As the voltage varies, ink is “dropped” (not jetted) out and lands on the paper. Nonetheless, piezo-electric dropping is still one method in the family of inkjet printing.

If you try to print using an ink cartridge that is empty or nearly empty nothing will come out and your paper will remain white. But if your printer has color ink (in one or more cartridges), then it should work!

Tip #2: Try to Print Multiple Times

Sometimes merely printing the same document multiple times can increase the sharpness and boldness. As the ink warms up and as the tubes become less blocked, more ink can flow. Here’s an illustrative set of printing a document three times after being converted to blue using the PDF Color Change tool:

Three attempts to print using an inkjet printer that was unused for months. Notice in the first print, the title of the document is completely missing the first few letters. The second print is better. The third print is even darker, bolder, and is a more-than-adequate substitute for a printing a document when you are out of black ink.

What kinds of colors can your print without Black Ink?

The example image below shows you can print a variety of colors without black ink. The print was made on an inkjet printer that had no remaining ink in its HP 61 black cartridge, but did have ink in the HP 61 tricolor cartridge.

A print with the black HP 61 ink cartridge nearly empty can yield a variety of colors.

Tip #3: Try shaking the printer ink cartridges

Shaking may increase the viscosity of the ink and unclog the opening. This can make the ink flow more easily. Clearly this only works if you have some ink in the cartridge. Often the cartridges feel light and empty, but there is some left! This isn’t quite like shaking a polaroid picture, but it can still make images appear like magic!

Tip #4: Try Cleaning and Aligning

Sometimes a printer will produce a nearly blank page even though there is actually black ink available. Cleaning can unclog lines. Aligning can make things line up to produce more solid and bold prints. To clean and align, first try to use the menu on the printer. If you can’t figure it out there, try to open your Printer settings on your computer. There is often a button or two to click on that cleans and/or aligns.

Tip #5: Remove your black ink cartridge

Try removing your black ink cartridge — sometimes this “tricks” your printer and makes it print black from the color cartridge.

A user asked for more ways to control how to make a PDF look like it has been printed and scanned, so I made it happen! The improved Make PDF Look Scanned Online app includes new features that allow users to control the “dirt” type, amount, and more. It is now easier than ever to customize the scanned look on a PDF to please anyone who is into PDF forms and documents!

The app makes a PDF look printed and scanned by adding random noise, dirt, rotation, converting to greyscale or black and white and more.

TWO APP VERSIONS

There are two different versions of the app: the basic app which is quick and easy to use. Another more advanced app has more features, but may not be as easy to use. The features described below are available in the advanced app.

PDF Dirt Amount

The “Dirt amount” slider controls how much speckles, cracks, creases and general dirtyness shows on the page. The dirt is placed semi-randomly around the image to mimic what happens when there are specs of dust on a scanner or a printer makes streaks on the paper as it feeds across the printer head. The dirt isn’t totally random, because printers and scanners don’t act totally random. Rather, the noise is grouped in globs and in lines. However, the globs and lines are rather random, which simulates the fact that not all printers and scanners have the same noise.

PDF Dirt Quality

The “Dirt Darkness” slider controls how bold the dirt shows up on the PDF page. Often a real speck of dirt will not be completely black. Users can now make a PDF look super dirty and old or just slightly aged.

PDF Dirt Style

The “Dirt Style” slider controls the dirt source template. Each template varies the kinds of dirt available: from circles to triangles to a complete overlay that looks like a stain. Changing the template is now in the hands of the user! Try various templates to see what fits your document and desired output.

TRY OUT THE APP NOW: https://supertool.org/make-a-pdf-look-printed-and-scanned/

Adding Noise to a PDF

The “Noise” slider now controls a random amount of noise that mimics the digital noise introduced by scanners. It also randomly varies a slight shading overlay. The shading overlay mimics how a page on scanner won’t lie completely flat and thus some parts are darker than others.

Making a PDF Look Scanned by Changing to Black and White

Users can now switch from the default Greyscale (which changes all colors to a shade a grey, white or black) to a pure Black and White. Try out the Pure Black and White if you are looking to make a PDF look very old and dirty. It recreates the look of old printers and scanners by turning all colors to either full black or white, with nothing in between.

Add A Signature to a PDF

As always, you can add a signature to a PDF. The signature panel lets you “mouse” draw a signature. An algorithm that smooths a jerky mouse movement into a signature that looks like it was made with a pen is working hard in the background. The line width varies depending on how fast you draw and hard angles and made rounder. It is best to draw fast to make the signature look real on PDF.

There is a new resolution control. This slider can be varied to mimic more or less noise or precision in the document. Lower resolutions process faster and give a PDF a blurry look.

Finally, updates to the user interface were made to make this SuperTool the best online app for making a PDF look scanned. As always, it works with multi-page PDFs and varies the dirt, noise, tilt, blur and more across each pages in a realistic fashion. Makes for great artwork!

PDF stands for Portable Document Format. From the standpoint of most users and creators of PDFs, PDFs are computer documents that contain text and images. They frequently contain scientific and industry reports, graphics, invoices, and mailing labels. Essentially anything that is on a sheet of paper can be included in a PDF. Narrative language like stories, books, and poems can be made into a PDF. Drawings of faces and political memes can be made into PDFs. Collections of images, like photos of a birthday party or your pets, could be included in a PDF. In addition to static text and images, PDFs can contain videos, sound, and even interactive applications.

One of the most used features of PDFs are interactive forms. Not many folks are likely to love filling out forms in PDFs, but it has become a frequent activity connected to on-boarding at a new company or applying for something at a government agency and hundreds of other forms of administrivia. You can type inside various input fields and the text will be rendered based on the rules of the PDF document. For example, you could type your name into a PDF field and the logic in the PDF could turn that text to the color blue. While changing the color of text may not be a frequent use-case, it provides an example of how PDFs are truly interactive – you do something, and depending on what you do the PDF will make a certain kind of display.

The Tech Behind a PDF

The behemoth company Adobe invented the PDF format decades ago. But now the document format is part of standards framework that goes beyond Adobe: the International Organization for Standardization (or ISO). The newest PDF standard, published in 2020, is worth quoting at length to understand what a PDF is from the standpoint of the standards organization. PDF 2.0:

“specifies a digital form for representing electronic documents to enable users to exchange and view electronic documents independent of the environment in which they were created or the environment in which they are viewed or printed. It is intended for developers of software that creates PDF files (PDF writers), software that reads existing PDF files and (usually) interprets their contents for display (PDF readers), software that reads and displays PDF content and interacts with the computer users to possibly modify and save the PDF file (interactive PDF processors) and PDF products that read and/or write PDF files for a variety of other purposes (PDF processors). (PDF writers and PDF readers are more specialised classifications of interactive PDF processors and all are PDF processors).”
International Organization for Standardization

Now let’s try to parse that complicated language a bit by way of example of what is not a PDF. Let’s say you have written a letter to someone with a pen on a sheet of paper. That document is not digital – it is “analog” and has no quantiziation of data into a digital format like 1’s and 0’s which is the basic unit of computation for most computers. Instead, the letter has varying amounts of ink placed on a sheet of paper – neither the ink or the paper is digital. If someone wants to view your letter, you’d have to give it to them maybe by mailing it or merely handing it over in person. The paper letter can’t be viewed independent of the context that it was created – rather it was created on a specific sheet of paper and it can only be viewed on that sheet of paper.

Now imagine you write the same letter by typing into a word processing program like MS Word. Then, you save that document as a PDF (often using a “print” feature in a drop-down menu). At that point, the data for the letter is digital and can be viewed elsewhere. Indeed, you can email it to someone and they can view it on their own computer or phone. That is, the environment that created it, your computer, isn’t required to view it.

SuperTool includes both a PDF reader, interpreter, and writer. When you upload a PDF to change the color, it is read, displayed in a web browser (interpreted), and then written when it is downloaded to your machine. There are a number of complicated software libraries that support all the management of digital data that is inside of a PDF. Luckily, that complication need not bother a user. Instead, simply clicking a mouse is all that is needed to change colors in the SuperTool that changes PDFs to color online.
